2017 Yamaha YZF-R6 | First Look Review

After teasing a new supersport model reveal with two “R World” videos, Yamaha’s global unveil of its all-new 2017 YZF-R6 took place at the American International Motorcycle Expo (AIMExpo) in Orlando, Florida, on October 13, 2016. Watch the video below to see it in action.

A chip off the R1 block, the middleweight R6 has new, more aerodynamic bodywork with LED lighting, integrated front turn signals, a new aluminum fuel tank and an R1-style tail section.

With its Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle ride-by-wire system, the new R6 has new engine response modes, multi-mode traction control and is available with an accessory quickshifter. Its liquid-cooled, 599cc in-line four-cylinder engine has DOHC with four titanium valves per cylinder, a 13.1:1 compression ratio and forged pistons. Liner-less, direct-plated, ceramic-composite cylinder bores improve heat dissipation and reduce friction, while magnesium engine covers minimize weight. The 6-speed transmission has stacked input and output shafts to save space and centralize mass, and it’s mated to a racing-derived slipper clutch. A midmount titanium exhaust further centralizes mass and saves weight.

Holding the new R6 together is the latest generation of Yamaha’s Deltabox aluminum frame, which carries a new lightweight magnesium subframe and a flatter, more narrow seat. The R6’s fully adjustable 43mm upside-down fork is the same one found on the R1, and it’s paired with a new fully adjustable KYB rear shock. Also like the R1, larger 320mm front discs are squeezed by radial-mount 4-piston calipers with a Nissin radial master cylinder. And ABS is now standard.

With its 4.5-gallon tank fuel and ready to ride, the new R6’s curb weight is 419 pounds.

The 2017 Yamaha YZF-R6 will be available in team Yamaha blue, Intensity white/matte silver or matte black for $12,199.
